Gateway vs. Bethel Park

Written by: on Thursday, November 20th, 2008

CLASS-AAAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Time: 8:00pm

Gateway Gators (12-0) vs. Bethel Park Black Hawks (12-0)

Everyone in Monroeville still has nightmares about last years WPIAL Championship, after coming back down 3 scores, and sending the game into overtime with one second left in the game on a hook-and-ladder play, the Gators still came one point short and another year went past with Terry Smith still wanting a title as a coach, already having one as a player with Gateway back in 1986.

Gateway will be the third repeat team that fans can see on Saturday, as well as in last years Championship, the other two being Beaver Falls, who also lost last year and Thomas Jefferson, who is the only team back from last year that won.

Gateway is ranked #3 team in the Country by the USA Today and had little trouble in the WPIAL this season. With key victories against Penn Hills in week one, and McKeesport in week 9.

Bethel Park has never won a WPIAL Championship, in fact they have had only one shot at a title which fell to Mount Lebaonon. The Black Hawks have been stealth-like this season knocking of the likes of Central Catholic, Upper St. Clair, and a huge upset win over McKeesport last week.

The Hawks come into Championship Saturday lead by quarterback Erik Olson, who has lit up the sky this season passing for over 1,000 yards. The key for BethelPark, is that their defense is able to keep up with Gateway’s high powered offense.

Speaking of Gateway, they come in only allowing 109 points this season, and unless they get shutout or the WPIAL finds a way to score negative points in 3 days, Gateway is a point away from a 500 point season (according to gatewaygators.com).

Terry Smith has more in common then just having played for Gateway in high school with some of his players, in fact some even share the same street address.  Firethorn Drive, has raised the likes of, Arron Smith (Steelers), Bj Stevens (Penn State), Justin King (Pitt), and current player Cory Brown, not to forget Terry Smith himself.

Farago thinks that it is about time Terry Smith gets a WPIAL title as a coach, and he also thinks that he has a chance at sweeping the WPIAL Champions from his picks back on August 22nd.
