It was Homecoming on Friday night at West Middlesex as the Big Reds bounced back from last week’s thrashing at Farrell for a big 24-7 victory over the previously unbeaten Wilmington. The Reds improve to (2-1, 3-1) on the season.
Through one quarter both teams were at a stalemate. As both defenses were showing their strength. However it was field position and turnovers that came up big for WM last night as they forced a fumble and picked off the Hounds 3 times.
The First score of the game came on a Chase Staunch Field Goal from 22 yards out to gain an early 3-0 advantage. The score remained like this up until seconds before intermission when Quarterback Nick Cannone took it to pay dirt from 1 yard out. Staunch’s PAT was good to make it 10-0 Big Reds entering the half.
In the second half it was Wilmington who struck first when back-up QB Rob Pontius hit Colton Marett from 47 yards out, followed by Winter’s kick. But from there on out it was the Big Reds Defense and running game that proved it’s dominance over the Hounds Hammer. Luke Hemminger and Jason Ash took over in the second half as they ran from 134 and 97 yards respectively with Hemminger scoring twice. Cannone also threw for 100 yards.
West Middlesex Defense held the hounds to a total of negative 10 rushing yards. QB Spencer Demedal did throw for 187 and Pontius another 47 but the Reds picked off Demedal 3 times, once by Josh Poterfield and twice by Safety Dylan Long. Who also had an outstanding game returning punts giving the WM offense great field Position the entire night.
Wilmington falls to (1-1, 3-1) and was led by Colton Marett who hauled in 6 passes for 87 yards and a Touchdown, Bryson Verrelli caught 5 for 42 yards and Slicker had 3 catches for 59 yards. Wilmington attempted 38 passes completing 17 for 234 yards with a TD and 3 Int’s. West Middlsex will be a District 10 powerhouse Sharpsville next week while Wilmington will Host unbeaten and a Region 1 favorite Farrell.
