The two-time defending District 6 AA champion Rangers are coming off another 13-win season (their second straight 13-win season) and berth in the PIAA AA semifinals opposite South Fayette. The Rangers’ five state semifinal appearances are tied with fellow Laurel Highlands Conference rep Bishop Carroll for the most state semifinal berths in D6 history.
The Rangers scored a school-record 539 points last year, and the man at the helm of the FH offense – quarterback Justin Gdula – returns after throwing for 1,613 yards and 27 touchdowns. Gdula stepped up last season to replace career 3,900-yard passer Zach Glessner and proved quite reliable under center, throwing four touchdown passes in four separate Ranger contests. The Rangers also had a potent ground game which averaged 242 yards per game, but 2,800 yards of that attack (Nick Dudukovich and Jeff Meier) graduated. That doesn’t mean there isn’t experience in the backfield behind #3. Senior Anthony Unger and junior Shawn Dell combined to run for 781 yards and 11 touchdowns, finishing as the Rangers’ third- and fourth-leading rushers. Receivers Jared Shope and Bobby Clifford and two-way linemen Jon Sanders and John Levi Ohler are also back.
Defensively, Shope, D.J. Burkey, Zack Pinkas, Unger, Dell, Sanders and Ohler all return. Shope and Burkey combined for 10 interceptions last season and Sanders and Ohler combined for 91 tackles and five sacks. On special teams, kicker Scott George nailed 59 PATs and two field goals in 2010, scoring 65 total points.
