The Spartans are the highest ranked AAA team from western Pennsylvania in this poll. On paper, Montour has what could turn out to be one of the most dominating and proficient offensive units in the AAA classification, spearheaded by a projected starting offensive line that averages 274 pounds per man, featuring Domenic Martinelli, Matt Barone, Matt Christiansen, Tyler Haddock and Joe Victorri, who return to help pave the way for a Spartan offensive unit which remains largely intact after averaging 372 yards, 32 points per game and scoring 57 total touchdowns last season.
The Spartans do not lack at the skill positions, either. Quarterback Dillon Buechel (158-of-262, 2,221 yds, 24 TD) has already thrown for 4,093 yards and 34 touchdowns in his career, and running back Julian Durden (263 rush, 2,033 yds, 25 TD) has run for nearly 3,000 yards the last two seasons, split between Montour and Class A program Pittsburgh North Catholic. Wide receivers Devin Wilson (55 rec., 757 yds, 12 TD), Darren Massey (44, 726, 9) and Aaron Reed (18, 212, 1) figure to all have huge seasons catching passes from Buechel.
Defensively, Montour returns eight starters, including its entire defensive backfield, from a season ago. Buechel, Durden, Martinelli, Barone, Haddock, and Wilson are all potential Division-1 prospects, having received varying levels of interest and offers. Montour has two 12-win seasons since 2007, but the Spartans have not hoisted a WPIAL football championship trophy since winning four titles (three outright, one tied) from 1957 to 1964.
