Team # 3 Aliquippa (7) 0-0

Look up the word consistency in Webster’s Dictionary and you might just find a picture of the Aliquippa Fighting Quips.  Since 1980, Aliquippa has reached 16 WPIAL AA or AAA championship games, reaching the finals each of the last three years, and winning eight WPIAL and two PIAA crowns.  And get this – an average season for the red and black since 1980 is an astounding average of 10.2 victories to only 2.2 losses.  No wonder Aliquippa is considered a legitimate contender on the gridiron year in and year out.

While the Quips have reached the WPIAL title game each of the last three years, the two most recent have been most unkind to Aliquippa – losses to Greensburg Central Catholic and South Fayette by a combined 52-13 (26-6.5).  Senior field general Mikal Hall returns for his third year of varsity action – Hall threw for 1,537 yards and 19 touchdowns last season and has thrown for 2,582 yards over the last two years, posting an overall record of 23-3.  Sophomore Drayvon Henry, the Quips’ leading rusher in 2010 with 820 yards and 13 touchdowns, is also back, along with linemen Emanuel Williams and J’Waymon Stone, from a unit which averaged 31.7 points per game, topping the 30-point mark in seven games.

Defensively, Aliquippa returns three defensive line starters in Jaleel Fields, Edward Mitchell and Chris Ingram, but the Quips’ linebacking corps and defensive backfield was decimated by graduation.  Aliquippa’s defense allowed an average of 8.6 points per game last season.
