Steel Bowl Highlights Week One Action

September 5, 2011 Week 1 featured plenty of lopsided wins in District 10’s opening weekend of football action. Perhaps an exception would be the Steel Bowl at Sharon High School on Friday night, the annual kickoff classic between the Farrell Steelers and the Sharon Tigers. The Steelers downed the Tigers 28-27, in what is sure to be a memorable 4th quarter. With Sharon leading 14-7 through 3 quarters, the 4th quarter saw 5 TDs and 3 lead changes, ending with Farrell QB Forrest Wested’s 26 yd TD pass to Lance Messett with 0:17 seconds left to give Farrell the win.

In Other Action:
-Hickory RB DeShawn Coleman rushed for 295 yds on 18 carries to give the Hornets a 35-6 win over West Middlesex

-Cochranton started their season strong, beating Conneaut Valley 43-6, powered by Austin Andrews’ 194 rushing yds and 2 scores.

-Kennedy Catholic’s Brennan Wassil completed 6 of 8 passes for 171 yds and 5 TDs as the Golden Eagles routed Maplewood, 46-6.

-North East’s Alex Svetz rushed 22 times for 185 yds and 4 TDs in the Grapepickers’ 48-21 win over Greenville.

-In one of the best performances in D-10 history, Linesville’s Jimmy Kearns scored on a fumble return on the first play from scrimmage, then went on to score 5 more times on 6 carries and 146 yds. Kearns also scored on a 2 point conversion, giving him 38 points in the game. This ranks as the 6th greatest single game performance in D-10 history. Linesville, newly merged with Conneaut Lake, won handily 61-26 over Cambridge Springs.

-Wilmington’s Ryan Crawford led the Greyhounds to a 36-14 victory over Slippery Rock on 3 TDs and 85 yds rushing.

-McDowell topped Cathedral Prep, 25-20, in their annual meeting, despite Prep QB Damion Terry’s 232 pass yds and 3 TDs.

-Denzel Jones scored 3 TDs to power Strong Vincent to a 42-28 win over General McLane.

-Lakeview’s Blake Reddick rushed for 120 yds on 13 carries, including a 53 yd TD run, as the Sailors downed Union City 27-13.

-Meadville’s Fred Epps rushed for 187 yds, Terrance Goodrum rushed for 172 yds and scored 4 total TDs and the Bulldogs defeated Fairview 33-14 at Edinboro University.

-Kyle Mariacher rushed for 161 yds and 2 TDs, but it wasn’t enough to take down perennial powerhouse Mercyhurst Prep, as the Lakers earned a 27-14 win.

-Central Tech’s Martell Crockett tossed a 41 yd TD pass and had a 56 yd TD run as the Falcons beat Franklin 30-14.

-Northwestern held Reynolds to 86 total yds, including only 53 yds on 46 carries, and edged the Raiders 13-7.

-Grove City’s Wes Phipps rushed for 118 yds on 7 carries and scored on a 56 yd TD run, and the Eagles rolled East 42-7

-Seneca’s Joe Hibbler rushed for 113 yds, but it wasn’t enough, as Youngsville picked off 4 passes to help them to a 19-7 win.

-Austin Griffith and Sean Kuzilla scored 2 TDs a piece to lead Harbor Creek to a 43-7 win over Ft. Leboeuf.

-Oil City’s Logan Way caught 2 TD passes to help the Oilers to a 41-28 win over Iroquois.

-Corry’s Matt Cragg scored on an 18 yd run, a 50 yd punt return, and threw a 13 yd TD pass to lead the Beavers to a 30-3 victory over Girard.

-Olean, NY’s Maleke Fuentes rushed for 192 yds and 2 scores to beat Bradford 47-18.

-Dubois scored 28 3rd quarter points and Brady Haines rushed for 160 yds and 2 TDs as the Beavers took down Punxsutawney 42-7.

-In their 1st game in program history, Imani Christian defeated Saegertown 38-20. Imani Christian is from the Pittsburgh area, and is expected to join WPIAL as early as next season.

-Sharpsville looked dominant, racking up 378 rushing yds and shutting out Eisenhower 52-0

-Titusville’s Alex Kline rushed for 114 yds and 2 TDs, and Drew Sneeringer ripped off a 63 yd TD run to seal a 19-5 Rockets victory over Warren.
