State College Advances with win over Erie

Written by: on Saturday, November 11th, 2017

State College started slowly turning the ball over downs, but after that, the Little Lions rolled past Erie 48-12 Friday night.

“I love coming out of a playoff game with a victory, I’m really proud of the effort of my kids from the opening snap until the end of the game,” said State College head coach Lintal. “Being able to get a lot of kids out here playing time in the second half was huge as well.”

Dominating on both offense and defense, quarterback Tommy Friberg led the way as threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns.

Tristen Lyons who rushed for 35 yards and a touchdown set up the game’s first score by returning a punt 46 yards to the Royals 19-yard line; where one play later Friberg and Jeremy Bullock hooked up for a 19-yard touchdown.

“That return really got our momentum going and was a huge play,” said Lintal “It was frustrating coming off of that first drive and not getting any points. But our kids knew they could move the ball, and we knew what we were up against; we knew how they were going to play us.”

Isaiah Edwards rushed for two first-half touchdowns from 17 and three yards out. His 3-yard run came after the Lions recovered a bad punt snap at the Royals 3-yard line.

Erie did find the end zone in the first half as Danny Blue scored on a 13-yard run capping an 8-play 69-yard drive.

However, the State College defense held them in check for the rest of the game.

“We had a great week of practice versus an offense that we don’t ever see, they prepared very well, and our defensive coaches did a great job in getting the kids ready,” said Lintal.

Recovering an onside kick to begin the second-half all but sealed the win as it started a streak of four consecutive touchdowns that put the PIAA’s mercy-rule into effect.

“That onside kick was planned, we just weren’t sure when we were going to pull it out. Watching film it was one of those things that we thought we had a shot at,” said Lintal.

Brandon Clark hauled in a pair of touchdown receptions from Friberg covering 51 and 24 yards.

Clark had 109 yards on six catches.

Lyons also ran a 6-yard touchdown, and Sammy Knipe stripped Royals runningback Blue and returned a fumble 55 yards making the score 48-6 with 10:05 to play.

Erie got a late touchdown as Blue connected with Jason Williams from 23 yards out.

“We couldn’t have played a worse first-half to start the game. We still felt like we were in it, but that onside kick killed us. We just made a bunch of mistakes,” said Erie head coach Rob Matz.

Blue led the Royals rushing for 67 yards on 15 carriers and completing 2-of-5 passes for 44 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

“We’ve been through so much adversity, for the kids to just tune out the negativity and build to be District 10 champions in a short time in our first season was an unbelievable experience,” said Matz.
