Small School Team # 5 Grove City (10) 0-0Written by: David Mika on Monday, August 27th, 2012
Playing in AAA last season, Grove City rolled to an 11-1 record, District 10 championship and put quite a scare into WPIAL champion Montour before bowing, 25-21, in the PIAA quarterfinals. The Eagles averaged a whopping 49.4 points per game and even shut out Erie Cathedral Prep. Now, Grove City drops down to AA, and the Eagles look to continue their roll.
But gone are veteran quarterback Tyler Dagres, All-State selection Wes Phipps (1,430 rush yds, 30 total TD) and a pair of 300-pound linemen, Josh Patterson and Alex Gilmore. Don’t be fooled. Jeff Bell (101-59) has some key pieces returning from his 2011 unit, namely 300-pound behemoth lineman Shaun Smoker and a trio of backs – Foster Reznor, Harold Price and Chad Williams – who combined to run for more 1,630 yards and score 24 rushing touchdowns. Williams, Reznor and Price also return defensively, as does DB Kyle Trinch (40 tackles, 7 INTs, 7 pass def.). Though GC may not put the points up in bunches like it did last season when it scored a school single-season record 593 points, the Eagles will still be a forimdable force in the District 10 landscape.
