Small School Team # 4 Hickory (10) 0-0

Written by: on Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

The defending District 10 AA champs have been rolling under head coach Bill Brest (20-5 last two seasons) and enjoy the benefits of West Virginia recruit and feature running back DeShawn Coleman for another season. Coleman wound up running for 2,393 yards and 31 touchdowns in his junior season and gives Hickory an added spark on the offensive side of the ball. Coleman reached that yardage total in just 12 games, meaning he could pose a legitimate threat to former Mercyhurst Prep back Aaron Horton’s single-season rushing yardage record in District 10 (2,444 yards).

But the Hornets have much more sting offensively than Coleman returning – senior field general Mike Nardone (74-of-121, 1,337 yds, 13 TD) returns, as does FB/LB Mike Palumbo (65 rush, 400 yds, 4 TD) and WR/DB Dionte Pope (14 rec., 224 yds, 3 TD), plus some experience in the trenches. Hickory should be among the primary contenders for another District 10 AA championship game berth, though the Hornets will be stiffly tested in an always-tough Region 3 slate.
