Richland remains unbeaten

Written by: on Saturday, November 3rd, 2012

When the District 6 A and AA playoffs begin next week you can be sure of one thing: the teams that have to face Bellewood-Antis and Richland are facing two VERY good defenses.  Richland on this night, proved to have the better of the two, stopping the Blue Devils inside the red zone  on several occasions to hold on for a 14-7 win.

Both teams entered the game as first seeds in the playoffs and undefeated. This one was a big test for both powerhouses. “Being undefeated was never one of our goals, but it certainly is a great opportunity,” Bellwood coach John Hayes said. “It hurts because we didn’t win, but the way we played … I know there are no moral victories, but we played toe-to-toe with an extremely good football team and we just came up a play short.”

That play was an 8 yard td throw from Bellewood-Antis quarterback Seth Worthing to Ian O’Shea as time expired in the half. The only problem was it was one yard short of the endzone and proved to be the difference in the game.

Richland got the only score of a defensive, turnover filled first half . An 8 yard punt by the Blue Devils  gave the ball to the Rams on their own 38. With star Richland running back Tanner Solarcyzk being held in check, the Rams turned to tailback Dominic Farina.  He carried the ball on all three plays of the drive, the last a 5 yard touchdown run.  The point after was blocked and Richland led 6-0.

“Dominic might not be a starter, but we value him as a starter,” Richland coach Brandon Bailey said.

The Blue Devils started the second half with a bang.  Haden DeGennaro burst through the Richland defense and went 31 yards to the endzone.  Tyler Campbell kicked the point after to make it 7-6 in favor of the Blue Devils.

The Rams took the second possession of the half to the 50 but were forced to punt.  Bellewood-Antis took over at their 19.  Worthing threw a pass that went right off his receivers hands and into the hands of Kyle Flick, a 3 year starter at wide receiver for the Rams, and Flick took the interception 42 yards to get Richland their first lead of the game.  The Rams got the two point conversion.

Several times the Blue Devils set themselves up nicely but couldn’t finish the drives.  On the ensuing kick the ball went straight to Blue Devils big play maker Casey Gray.  He took the kick 55 yards to the Ram 33 but the Richland defense once again held the Blue Devils on downs.

Bellewood-Antis would get another shot driving 57 yards to the Ram 8.  Worthing, who was harassed by the Rams defense all night, sailed a pass to the endzone off his back foot and for the second time of the night Flick intercepted him.  Richland took over and knocked 6 minutes off the clock before punting.  And a dandy it was for the Rams as the punt landed at the Blue Devil 5, bounced one time to the one and stopped dead.  99 yards stood between Bellewood-Antis and the tie score.  They made a valiant effort, Worthing to Gray for 57 yards, a run to the 35 by DeGennaro but on 2nd down Worthing made maybe his biggest mistake of the night. Dropping back to pass Worthing was immediately chased by Ram defenders. Instead of throwing the ball away the senior quarterback ran backwards and was sacked for a 22 yard loss.  A third down throw gave the Blue Devils a manageable 4th down but the Rams got their third pick of the night and ran out the clock.
