Quips run over Washinton

Written by: on Saturday, November 24th, 2012

When you finish with 340 yards rushing, 38 yards passing and 26 points you know your team had a great game.  For Aliquipa that’s a great first half.  The Quips had three runners go over 100 yards for the night en route to a 34-7 thrashing of the Prexies.  If you want to get technical, Washington did  hold the Quips to it’s lowest points total of the year.  The Prexies also matched the second most points scored by one team against the Quips, seven.

Malik Shegog got his offense rolling on their first possession. Following a 35 yard run from Terry Swanson, the speedy quarterback went 12 yards for the score.  The two point conversion failed but the Quips were already geared up for the win. With six shutouts and only 42 points scored against them all year this defense was ready and battle tested.  What they were not ready for was a punter with a thunder foot.  After the Quips’ defense held the Prexies on downs,  punter Brian Caldwell booted the ball deep to pin the Quips at their own five.

Did we mention that the Quips could score fast? Two big carries of 20 and 15 yards were followed by one huge 60 yard touchdown run from Swanson.  Just like that the Quips held a 14-0 lead.  94 yards, three plays, 47 seconds.

Once again the Quips’ defense held giving the ball back to Shegog and company.  They wasted no time and marched another 78 yards, this time Shegog finished from 22 yards out to make the score 20-0.

Caldwell was once again called upon to bail out the Prexies, this time nailing a 63 yard punt moving the Quips back to their 20.  Shegog then ran 39 yards, followed by a Swanson 14 yard run.  On fourth and inches Henry fumbled and the Prexies took over with just 1:50 left in the game.  The Quip’s defense held, and Caldwell was once again in place to flip the field position. Only this time the punter who averaged 58 yards on his first three punts shanked one, giving the Quips the ball at the 28 with 43 seconds left in the half. That’s an eternity for the offense that had 62 touchdown drives of under 60 seconds this year.

Shegog hit Dajon Perry for the 28 yard score and the Quips led at the half 26-0.  When asked about his offensive success at the break, Quips’ coach Mike Zmijanac said, “We played defense, that’s how you get good offense. Get them the ball. We didn’t expect them to punt the ball to mars.”

Shegog, Henry and Swanson (who finished with over 200 yards) would control the next drive with Henry finishing the drive. The Quips led 34-0.  Washington would score on a 50 year fumble return to close out the scoring.
