Quaker Valley pegs Central Catholic Freshman Head Coach Ron Balog to lead Quakers

Written by: on Tuesday, April 17th, 2018

How do you top a season in which a team pulled a head coach from the microphone in the announcers booth just days before the 2017 season starts, who then takes that team on a roll straight to Hershey and wins the state championship? “Here’s where I start. By creating a positive atmosphere of effort and attitude and fundamentals of technique that if we get good at we will be successful. No conversations of WPIAL titles or state titles” said new Quaker Head Coach Ron Balog.

Ron has been the Central Catholic freshman Head Coach for the last 2 years, and before that coached 7th and 8th grade in the Catholic system in Pittsburgh. “Coach Veshio did an unbelievable job with the athletes and players there. They nailed the intangibles, they believed in each other. They played for each other. When you get that going, it’s hard to stop. So it is my goal to create and carry on like that at Quaker Valley. We are going to compete on the field, in the classroom and we will be in our community serving because at the end of the day thats what we want to create, servant leaders.

Up until January, Balog was happy where he was and had no plans on being a varsity head coach. “It’s crazy, this all kinda just happened. I wasn’t hunting for a head coach job at the varsity level. I had some parents I’m friends with who are parents of Quaker Valley kids come to me one day and say “when are you going to be a varsity head coach?” I said I don’t know, I love Central Catholic, they treated me well there and I believe in the mission of the catholic hs system. The said we think you should apply for the QV job. We think your personality fits.  So I talked with my wife, sent my stuff in January, got the interviews and I guess they liked me cause they offered me the job.

When asked about future staff Balog said “I believe in continuity. I’m a big fan of that.  Ed Pesicka and I talked and he’s going to stay on. I’m going to talk to everybody because at the end of the day, continuity wins.” He had a brief meeting with the players today “just so they could see my face”.
