Before a national TV audience, Pine Richland and its standout quarterback, Phil Jurkovec, put on quite a show in routing the Wayne Warriors 41-0 before a standing room only crowd at Pine Richland’s state of the art stadium.  On an August afternoon that was not too warm, the Rams got hot in a hurry and thoroughly dominated one of Ohio’s top teams.  In doing so, they served notice, not only to the rest of District 7, but to the state that Pine Richland is for real.

Jurkovec was a one man wrecking crew on offense, tossing 3 touchdown passes and running for 3 more, accounting for all 6 scores.  He was 14 of 20 passing for 237 yards and carried the pigskin 7 times for 107 yards.

Not to be outdone, the defense pitched a shutout by being physical and opportunistic causing 4 turnovers.  “We had to be physical to beat such a formidable opponent,” stated Ram’s coach Eric Kasperowicz.  He also said that a difference from last year is that the defense played with emotion and confidence.

Wayne won the toss, but deferred allowing the Rams to receive the opening kickoff.  Kenny White found a seam and returned the ball 37 yards to the 39.  From there the green and white drove to the Warrior 33, but a holding penalty and a sack forced a punt from Wayne’s 43 which rolled into the end zone for a touchback.

The defense held the Ohioans and the subsequent 47 yard punt put Pine Richland in business at their own 22.  After a first down, Jurkovec called his number and made it around the end, stiff-armed a defender and headed to the sideline where he won the foot race, scoring a 64 yard touchdown with 8:24 left in the first period.  Vittorio Orsini’s PAT gave the Rams a 7-0 lead, which they would not relinquish.

Pine Richland’s Luke Meckler recovered a Warrior fumble deep in Ram territory on Wayne’s next possession.  Jurkovec immediately hit Raymond Falcone for 41 yards and a couple plays later connected with Falcone for the 28 yard score and making it 14-0 for the home team at the 3:48 mark of the first.

Meckler recovered another fumble at the Pine Richland 3 early in the second quarter to thwart another Wayne drive.  After another exchange of punts, Jurkovec led his team 97 yards to increase the score to 21-0.  He hit Jason DeFrancisis for 63 yards, then later for 29 yards and the TD with 5:37 remaining in quarter two.  On the next PR possession Mr. Phil ran 21 yards on a nice scramble to allow his team to lead 28-0.

The nail in the coffin for Wayne came when they couldn’t move the ball on their subsequent drive and gave it back to the Rams after a short punt at the Warrior 39 with 1:21 left in the half.  It took Jurkovec and company 1:14 to take advantage.  He scored his third rushing touchdown from 2 yards out and with Orsini’s PAT put the mercy rule in effect for the second half.

On the Rams first second half drive Jurkovec found Jordan Crawford from 24 yards out which set the final at 41-0.  From there Kasperowicz used his second team the rest of the way on offense.

Notes and Quotes: “Man for man they (Wayne) were bigger, faster, and stronger than us.  But, our guys had a huge amount of heart, played for the love of one another, and they made plays when they needed to,” Coach Kasperowicz reflected.  Crawford had an interception for the Rams, while Brendan Eckenrode recovered a third fumble.  DeFrancisis had 3 catches for 105 yards, while Falcone had 5 for 82.  Transfer RB Kenny White had 9 carries for 46 yards before apparently taking a helmet to the knee and not being able to continue.  “We’ll be praying for him and hoping for the best as he is going to get an MRI,” said Kasperowicz.  Both bands were phenomenal at half time.  It is so good to see big high school bands that can play so well.  Pine Richland takes on Mount Lebanon this Friday at PR.

Wowza. PR got it goin on. If they keep playing like that any talk in the east as to who is the best is irrelevant. As I don’t have cable had to watch this game at the local Planet Fitness; 3 hours on the treadmill and was worth every last calorie. Sure hope Kenny White is all right.
