Multi-purpose types of athletes may not dominate one statistical category, but rather spread the damage over several areas. One such athlete wears the scarlet and gold of Penn Hills High School.
Corey Jones, a 5’10, 165-pound senior-to-be at Penn Hills, has a quartet of Division-1 verbal scholarship offers, according to national recruiting service Scout.com. Kansas, Kent State, Toledo and West Virginia have all offered the Indians’ athlete, and Scout and Rivals.com list interest suitors that have not yet extended offers as Cincinnati, Connecticut, Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt and Syracuse.
Scout.com rates Jones as a three-star recruit and the 72nd-best wide receiver prospect in the 2012 class.
Jones did a little bit of everything for Penn Hills in his junior season, earning a 1st Team All Big East Conference selection and a slot on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s East regional Fabulous-22 team. He earned the post-season honors by racking up a total of 710 yards combined rushing and receiving (288 rushing, 422 receiving). He was Penn Hills’ leading scorer, accounting for 16 total touchdowns scored in five different ways (kick return, punt return, interception return, rushing and receiving). Ten of Jones’ 16 touchdowns came on the offensive side of the ball.
Penn Hills finished 5-5 overall in 2010, reaching the WPIAL AAAA playoffs and falling to Upper St. Clair in the opening round, 37-21.
