Penn Cambria athlete generating D-1 interest

Written by: on Friday, July 3rd, 2009

It isn’t often that you hear of Division-1 athletes hailing from Penn Cambria High School.

Zak Newton, though, certainly has the stats to back the title of Division-1 prospect up.

Newton, a two-way player for the Panthers, has interest from seven Division-1 programs, according to Rivals.com.

The 6’0, 195-pound multi-purpose athlete has drawn attention from Cincinnati, Indiana, Maryland, Penn State, Pitt, Michigan State, and Temple.

Newton finished the 2008 season by running for 2,059 yards, throwing for 209 more, and accounting for 24 total touchdowns.  Defensively, he recorded 94 tackles and a pair of sacks.

Newton is just 1,471 rushing yards shy of becoming Penn Cambria’s first career 4,000-yard rusher.

Penn Cambria, located in Cresson in southeastern Cambria County, competes in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference, which includes schools like Greater Johnstown, Forest Hills, and Bishop McCort.
