Mountaineers Shock Red Raiders

Written by: on Saturday, October 20th, 2012

BERLIN-The ominous sky almost perfectly foreshadowed this Senior Night matchup in which undefeated Berlin (8-0) hosted a struggling Meyersdale squad (1-7.)

“They’re a team that’s down this year and they came ready to play. They hit [two] big special teams plays, but once we made some adjustments at halftime, we were able to come back out and do some different things. We kinda slept walked through this one, so adjustments will have to be made.”

Assistant coach Bobby Taylor versed after the game.

The Red Raiders showed electrifying kickoff returns early in the first half. Both Chris Schrock and Anthony Mcfee blew past the otherwise potent Berlin defense on separate special team scores.
In an attempt to respond, Luke Bonus reminded the home crowd of his breakout season presence with a touchdown catch. Joining Bonus was TE Luke Sprowls who highlighted the pass game with a respectable 51 yard gain on a toss from Quarterback Blake Miller. Despite efforts from receivers, the Mountaineers could not muster up any other substantial offense.

This is at least the third straight showing of the “second half team” that has been the culprit of many chronic cases of cold sweats and nail biting amongst players, coaches, and spectators alike. Surprisingly enough, it took a bit longer than usual for the Mountaineers to bounce back.

Enter Drew Glotfelty, Mitchell Walker, and Stew Trulick.

Glotfelty, a force that teams struggle to tame, remained muffled by Meyersdale. But even when he is contained he manages 121 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns.

On the other side of the pigskin, Berlin Senior Mitchell Walker was able to demonstrate his prime form and lead his team with 12 tackles on the night. Stew Trulick and EJ Custer contributed for a combined 19 tackles in an effort that helped shine up the lackluster performance in the first half.

Just as the Mountaineers started to strike, so did the lightning.

The precautionary delay is what Coach Taylor said, “took the wind out of their [Meyersdale] sails a little bit.”
It was Bonus that appeared to have ripped a pass out of the air on a fourth down.  Instead, he drew a pass interference call, setting the Mountaineers up 15 yards.  Glotfelty took care of the rest, chalking up his third TD on the night. Levi Bowser drove yet another nail in the coffin with the extra point off of his toe, 28-27.

A last ditch attempt from Meyersdale QB Lance Leydig was shattered when Nick Stockwell smeared the proverbial icing on the cake as he tallied his 4th interception of the season.

Berlin travels to Rockwood next week, meanwhile Meyersdale hosts Shade.
