Mountaineers Pick Off Indians

Written by: on Friday, August 31st, 2012

The friday night lights are blaring, the stands are full, and for the home opener, Berlin hosts Conemaugh Township in a relatively symetrical “blast from the past” 41-6 victory.

Last season in the quarter finals, Berlin showed some serious firepower against CT with an impressive 42-7 win.

It was during that very game that Head Coach Doug Paul told the press that his team, “-point-wise, [has] the best defense in the WestPAC.”

Paul’s statement seemed to explain itself tonight after Berlin forced Township’s Junior QB, Bruno Ruso (#4), to toss five interceptions. Berlin’s own Nick Stockwell (#21), a fellow Junior, tallied two of those picks in the first half, one of which he took back for a touchdown. His 14 tackles also led the team.

During a post-game briefing, Stockwell said, “We came out firing for sure. Our line took care of everything up front and soon enough, everything else just fell into place.”

Berlin Senior Drew Glotfelty (#25) added an interception and pleased the fans with a nothing less than stellar game. He went on to rush for 146 yards and chalked up three touchdowns.

Clearly a veteran showing for this evening, but with rising talent like underclassman defensive backs Tyler DeArmitt (#1) and Brentson Harding (#9), an envied depth is added. Also joining this promising youngsters’ club, are brothers Braden (#3) and Bryce Focthman (#2) who both demonstrated that they are more than ready for the next step.

After the game, I caught up with Senior Receiver Luke Bonus (#86) who put the game in a composed perspective.

He went on by saying, “A first game win is always huge, but for right now, we have to start focusing for next week.”

Berlin travels to Portage for that Week 2 Matchup. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
