McKeesport dominates Gateway to claim Quad East title

Written by: on Friday, October 25th, 2013

When a team lines up with four division one college prospects at receiver positions you expect to see that offense dominate the opposing team. Well, it didn’t happen tonight. McKeesport signal caller David Queen ran the Tiger flexbone offense to near perfection accounting for 228 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. Add 94 yards for fullback Mikell Moore and all totaled the Tigers rushed for 402 yards on the ground running away with a 49-12 win.

McKeesport had great field position to start the game thanks to a 52 yard kick return from Allen Wright to set the Tigers up at the Gator 34 yard line. Wright had over 120 yards in returns in the game giving his team great field position all night. Five plays later Carlos Hudson scored on a 6 yard run and the point after gave McKeesport an early lead of 7-0.

The Tiger defense held Gateway to three plays on it’s first possession forcing a punt that rolled to the 17 yard line in what would be the Tigers worst starting point of the first half. Queen led his team on an 8 yard drive highlighted by a 45 yard run from the quarterback. Queen had 7 carries over 12 yards in the game. He finished the drive with a 1 yard run and with 7:07 left in the first quarter McKeesport led 14-0.

Gateway quarterback Jimmy Moore then led his team on a 75 yard drive, connecting with his receivers for 63 of those yards on 6 completions, the last a 15 yard td pass to Delvon Randall (7 rec. for 116 yards and a td). The point after failed and the Gators trailed 14-6 to start the second quarter.

McKeesport again had great field position to start a drive, this time at the Gator 48 following a 47 yard return by Wright. Queen again ran his team toward the end zone, this drive finished off by a 6 yard td run from Moore.

Gateway answered quickly with Jimmy Moore completing 3 passes for 67 yards, the last a 19 yard strike to Anthony Davis. The 2 point play failed leaving the score at 21-12. Moore completed 13 of 27 passes for 200 yards. He connected on his first nine passes but was just 4 of 18 after that.

The Gators appeared to finally stop McKeesport on the Tigers last drive of the half when tandout receiver/defensive back Montae Nicholson intercepted a 4th down pass at the 2 yard line but he was hit and fumbled the ball. McKeesport recovered and Wright took the ball in from 6 yards out giving the Tigers a commanding 28-12 lead at the half.

Queen added touchdown runs of 7 and 39 yards in the second half to cap the scoring.  “We came in ready to play. Tough, focused and ready to play”.

McKeesport will head into the WPIAL playoffs with a 9-0 record.
