When you insert a sophomore running back into a game to “relieve some early dings the starters have” (according to SC Head Coach Matt Lintall) you usually just hope he holds on to the ball. Tonight, Lintal found a star in Isaiah Edwards. All he did was rush for 170 yards on 8 carries, scoring three times.  Add in another 125 yards from sophomore QB Tommy Friberg and 112 yards from senior running back Tristen Lyons who scored twice, and you have an impressive ground performance. The Little Lions rushed for a whopping 476 yards.

They game started off very competitively with both teams finding the endzone twice in the first quarter. State College started the scoring with an 80 yard drive, capped by a one yard run by Lyons to make it 7-0 just 1:15 into the game.

On the ensuing kick, Hollidaysburg muffed the punt and Christian Roth pounced on the ball for the Little Lions at the Tiger 31. 2 plays later Friberg hit receiver Brandon Clark for a 13 yard td to make it 14-0 with 9:24 still to play in the first. Hollidaysburg battled back with two long drives, both ended with touchdown passes from junior quarterback Brady Walters to senior Jack Sauserman.

With the score at 14-13 (Keaton Ellis blocked the point after attempt on the second Tiger score) linebacker Jackson Heasley decided to take the game into his own hands. Following a td pass from Friberg to Jeremy Bullock, the Tigers lined up at the state College 29. Heasley burst through the line for one of three sacks on the night. The Tigers punted. It all fell into place for the Little Lions here, while it fell apart for the Tigers. Edwards tore off a 61 yard td run, his first of 2 long touchdown runs.

“My blockers did an amazing job. The runs just opened up and they couldn’t stop us” said Friberg. “

On the very next Tiger possession Heasley again made his presence felt as he dropped Patrick Young for a big loss. The Tigers were again forced to punt after three plays. Friberg ripped off an ankle breaking 47 yard run to the 13, and Edwards finished the 3 play drive with a 13 yard run to make it 34-13 going into the break. “I just came in to step up for my team when one of our players got hurt. Cohen Russel got injured so they put me in to help out. I was just following my blockers” said Edwards. “Even my receivers got in on the mix blocking, they do a great job.”

The second half started out with the Little Lions squibbing the kick, and once again the Tigers failed to get the ball. Triston Lyons scored from the 35 to put the Little Lions up 41-13. “Yeah, we saw something there in the first half we liked so we kinda did that on purpose” said Lintal.

But the Tigers didn’t give up. Mason McCready blocked a State College punt that Danny Molliver recovered in the endzone to make it 41-19 with 7:41 left to play in the third, but right after that Edwards delivered the back breaker, dashing 72 yards to put the Lions up by 28. Molliver also had a nice 31 yard td catch later in the game. Lyons, who had 111 yards and 2 scores on the night, finished the scoring with a 31 yard run.

State College moves on to Mid Penn League play at Mifflin county next week while it doesn’t get any easier for the Tigers. They’ll travel to Maryland to face powerhouse Fort Hill.

The State College Marching band opened the night with Anchors Away!

Following the game, both teams bands put on a great show for the fans:
