One of the keys to Jeannette’s run to the Interstate Conference title and berth in the WPIAL AA championship game has chosen to continue his collegiate football career in the Big Ten Conference.
Demetrious Cox, a 6’1, 185-pound quarterback/safety for the Jeannette Jayhawks, issued a verbal declaration to Michigan State Monday evening, according to national recruiting service Scout.com.
Cox, who was recruited as a safety, was one of the most sought-after defensive backs in the entire 2012 recruiting class. He held more than 30 total scholarship offers from all over the country – among them Arizona State, Iowa, Kansas State, Ohio State, Penn State, Syracuse, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Wisconsin – before choosing the Spartans.
The Jeannette star was rated as the No. 8 safety prospect in the 2012 recruiting class and was a four-star prospect, according to Scout.
Cox, a Pennsylvania Sportswriters’ Class AA All-state selection at defensive back, was a prime performer on both sides of the ball for Jeannette in his senior season. He operated the reins of a Jayhawk offensive unit which averaged 230 rushing yards and 36.8 points per game. He ran for 1,263 yards and threw for 858 more. On defense, he was part of a Jayhawk unit which allowed an average of 12.6 points per game, holding 11 of 13 opponents to 14 points or less.
