After defeating Imani Christian for WPIAL Single A Championship, Jeannette looked to advance to the State Championship for the first time since 2007, a team that was led by a guy named Terrelle Pryor.
They took on the Farrell Steelers a team out of District 10. Much of the first half was a defensive struggle. It was scoreless at the end of the first quarter. Neither team was in the opposition’s territory in that quarter.
In the second quarter Jeannette got into Farrell territory but the drive stalled when an interception was thrown.
The biggest play of the half occurred with 31 seconds left. After Jeannette intercepted it they had it at their own 49. On the very first play Seth Howard connected with Robert Kennedy for a 51 yard touchdown. That was the only scoring play of the first half making it 7-0 Jeannette.
After the game I asked Coach Hall on how huge that play was to give Jeannette a 7-0 lead at half and he said, “That was huge, but that’s been Robert Kennedy all year. We know that it is a team effort, but I’ll tell you what he could put the I in team.”
Jeannette got the ball to start the second half. They got into Farrell territory but the ball was intercepted which stopped the drive.
The next drive for Farrell also ended with an interception. Jeannette started at their own 45. After a big play they were at the Farrell 32. Later that drive Tre Cunningham kicked a 26 yard field goal making it 10-0 with 11:08 left in the game.
Later on in the quarter Jeannette sealed the game up on a drive that featured a lot of runs by Robert Kennedy, he finished it off on a 13 yard touchdown run making it 17-0 with 2:12 left.
Farrell added on a score on a 90 yard kick return to make the final 17-6. Robert Kennedy had a monster game. He had 130 yards on 18 carries with 1 rushing touchdown. He also had 2 catches for 56 yards and a touchdown that way.
With the win tonight Jeannette became the winningest team in WPIAL history with 735 wins. I asked Coach Hall what the feeling is like to be the winningest team in WPIAL history who said, “It feels great what we said all year we didn’t worry about that, we just kept winning, take care of the Clairton Bears in WPIAL Championship and make it to PIAA State Championship.” He also added that the win “hasn’t set in yet, but it will and it’ll be for real.”
Jeannette will play Homer Center out of District 6 for PIAA 1A State Championship next Thursday at 1pm at Hershey Park Stadium.
