The Hickory Hornets won their seventh straight game and advanced to the District 10 Class AA championship game with a 35-13 win over the Grove City Eagles at Slippery Rock University’s Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Hickory ground out 412 yards on the afternoon, DeShawn Coleman carried 14 times for 194 yards and three touchdowns, quarterback Matt Voytik ran 7 times for 118 yards and a score. The Hornets are now 10-1 overall and handed Grove City their only losses on the season, beating the Eagles 41-12 in Hermitage on September 21st.
The Hornets opened the scoring on the first play from scrimmage as Voytik went up the middle then kicked it to the outside for a 62 yard touchdown. Grove City attempted a fake punt on the next possession from their own 21, Kyle Trinch ran for 12 yards and a first down, Coach Jeff Bell rolled the dice later in the drive, going for it at his own 41, Trinch was stopped short of the marker and Hickory took over. Coleman fumbled on his next carry, the Eagles returned the favor two plays later. Jordan Wombacker missed a 24 yard field goal attempt.
Hickory scored early in the second quarter, taking an advantage of another fake punt by the Eagles at their own 34, Coleman scoring six plays later on a 5 yard run to put the Hornets up 14-0. Grove City had their best opportunity to score, driving to the Hickory 5, but Jared Graham and Forest Reznor were both tackled for a loss and Hickory dodged the threat.
The Eagles took the second half kickoff and drove down the field, Reznor broke a 43 yard run on the opening play, Graham scored on a 4 yard keeper to make it 21-6. But the Hornets broke it open with a Coleman 60 yard touchdown, the WVU recruit made a nice cutback move to get into the end zone.
Grove City tried to answer, going 13 plays, but the drive stalled out at the Hickory 25 as Tanner Lucido was stopped well short of the sticks. That set the stage for Coleman to go 75 yards for a touchdown and to put the game out of reach.
Mike Palumbo added a 5 yard scoring run for the Eagles, Reznor scored on a 3 yard run with 2:34 remaining for the Eagles.
Hickory committed 13 penalties for 113 yards, Davon Tindall added 76 yards rushing. The Hornets defense was led by Daulton Linton with 12 tackles, DeQuan Lewis added 11.
For Grove City, Reznor led the way with 15 carries for 83 yards, Chad Williams ran 24 times for 79 yards, he led the Eagles defense with 6 tackles. Grove City ends the season at 9-2.
