Hickory Defense Shuts Down Slippery Rock

Written by: on Saturday, September 9th, 2017

In the Hornets home opener, the defense led them to a 27-0 victory. Hickory’s offense seemed to be clicking on the first series as Junior QB Hayden Gallagher led the Hornets on a 10 play drive. However, there was a miscommunication that led to an end zone interception to stall the drive.

The defense picked up their QB as they forced Slippery Rock to one of its many 3 and outs. The ensuing drive for the Hornets ended with a Simeon McKinley 8yd TD run that was set up by an acrobatic 45yd reception by Will Gruber to put the Hornets up 7-0 after a Sam Scarton extra point. McKinley led the Hornets rushing attack with 71yds on 12 carries.

After another defensive stop, the Hornet offense got into the red zone for a 3rd time, this time resulting in a Scarton 29yd FG. Gruber made a big play on defense as he picked off Slippery Rock QB Jacob Shaffer on the following drive. The Hornet drive ended with another score as Gallagher threw a jump ball up to Mike Filardi that he caught over the top of a bigger defender in the corner of the end zone. Scarton tacked on the kick to make it 17-0.

The Slippery Rock offense got going on the next drive as they drove inside the Hornet 10yd line. Seth Slater was big for the Rocket on that drive picking up chunk yardage. Slater finished with 107yds on 17 carries. Their drive was stalled however after a holding call on 3rd down and the Rockets weren’t able to convert on 4th down.

The Hornets marched down the field and Scarton was able to kick a 23yd FG as time expired in the half to give the Hornets a 20-0 lead going into the break.

After halftime it was all about the defense for Hickory. Freshman defensive end Rocco Iacino put a huge hit on the quarterback that forced a fumble recovered by Dom Clary. However Hickory couldn’t muster up anything on the drive as they were forced into their only punt of the game.

The Rockets had another drive deep into Hornet territory but on 4th down, Darren Mitchell picked off a Shaffer pass in the end zone to keep the shut out.. Hickory Sophomore Vince Tarver capped off the scoring with a 4yd TD run to give the Hornets a 27-0 victory.

Hickory travels to Sharon next week for another huge region matchup.

Sam Scarton (Hick) 3/3xp, 2/2 FG (29,23)
Hayden Gallagher (Hick) 8/16, 122, 1TD 1INT
Seth Slater (SR) 17/107
