Gateway was looking to avenge a 28-0 loss to Penn Trafford early on in the season. In this game they were certainly different. The drives they scored were long clock eating drives.
Gateway did miss an opportunity in the first quarter when a pass was dropped in the end zone. Gateway got on the board first early on in the quarter on a 10 yard run by Brady Walker. On that drive they possessed the ball for 3 minutes and 31 seconds.
Penn Trafford answered back quickly on a big run by Cam Lafoon. Eventually they got on the board on a 2 yard run by John Gay to even up the score.
Gateway regained the lead with 4:24 in the second quarter on a Brady Walker pass to Courtney Jackson. The drive took a little over 3 minutes. The score at half was 14-7 Gateway.
In the third quarter Gateway put together another long beautiful drive. Derrick Davis finished it off with a 7 yard run. The drive was 10 plays and took up 66 yards it lasted for 4 minutes.
Early in the fourth quarter momentum swung toward Penn Trafford. A high snap out of the end zone made it 21-9 Gateway. The next drive. Penn Trafford pulled to within 5. Gateway nearly ran the clock out but didn’t. Penn Trafford started at their own 36 with 1:02 left. Derrick Davis came up huge again who had the game winning interception. Gateway won the game 21-16.
After the game I asked Coach Holl if he envisioned Derrick playing this big of a role in the last few games who said, “Here’s the thing, If their is anyone who knows Derrick his ability level and knows he’s capable of big things and he said he wasn’t surprised.”
Derrick Davis played a huge role in the win. He had 61 yards on 16 carries and had 9 catches for 49 yards. He also made the biggest play of the game. On the game winning interception. Gateway will Play Hollidaysburg next week. A time and site it to be determined.
