Key Stats:

2017 Offensive Outlook: The keys remain the same to me every year. Must find a way to remain as balanced as possible, use our personnel the right way, and stay healthy. The losses from graduation are heavy, the young core of this team will have to step up, it’s their team now. The offense will have to replace speed on the outside, QB Jordan Castelli who is on his way to Cal U, and outstanding RB Bryan Milligan. The offensive line loses four starters from last season. The 2017 version will be built around 20 game starter Aaron Smith and Riley Noble who gained valuable experience as a sophomore. The Tight End position is up for grabs as Donnie Opp, Converted QB Graydon Wass, and 6-3 Freshman Connor McMahon are fighting for the job. Davey Cooper and Alec Hendal return at the FB position while Anthony Sacco and a host of others will battle it out for the starting nod at the tailback position. We have some depth returning at WR with JR Cuyler Rancher and SR Greyden Piechnick – JR Drew Engel could be on the move to WR from TE last season. Fast improving SR Marshal White, SR Gerald Bowman, and JR Dillon O’Donoghue will also be in the mix. The QB position is up for grabs between two capable sophomores Jonathan Quinque and Tre Lewis.

2017 Defensive Outlook: Defensively, we improved in 2016 – we became a better tackling team. We will continue to stress our alignment and aggressive run fits along with continued improvement in tackling and understanding situational defensive football. Playing fast and stopping the run are always keys to me.
Despite the loss of all league CB Alonzo Lemus and LB Colton Blodgett, the defense will look to improve in the secondary and at the linebacker position. With DB Engel, CB Rancher, and FS/CB Piechnick we return some very good experience. We will have O’Donoghue, White, Sacco, SO Blake Joseph, JR Nate Healy, and SR Bowman battling to start and/or add depth in the secondary. JR LB Anthony Zanolla, JR LB Cooper, JR LB Hendal should solidify the middle along with newcomer Gerrit Nijenhuis and JR Shane Klein working to earn time. Up front DL Smith and DE Opp return but the loss of all-league Austin Robl looms large. Players like SR DT Nick McIntyre and SR DT Liam Torpey must fill the void.

2017 Special Teams Outlook: We return our Punter and Placekicker. JR Josh Byers improved throughout the 2016 season on his kickoffs and place kicks. We feel very good about him as well as our returning Punter, SR Wass.
