DuBois ends season with 35-13 loss to State College in the District 6-9 AAAA Championship

Written by: on Sunday, November 18th, 2012

The Beavers had an almost perfect 8-1 record coming into Mansion Park in Altoona to square off with the State College Little Lions. DuBois’ only loss of the season came from Slippery Rock who one 17-15 a few weeks back. State College, on the other hand, had an 8-3 record. Who was technically better? The out come of Friday’s game told the tale.

The down-ward spiral began for DuBois with a State College touchdown late in the first quarter to go up 7-0. The Little Lions put up seven more points early in the second quarter to go up 14-0. State College put more lemon juice in the eyes of the Beavers with an 88 yard touchdown run to go up 21-0 near halftime.

First half stats were close to nothing for DuBois. Sophomore RB Bryson Paulinellie played QB for a while during the first half. Starting sophomore QB Gade French made his appearance a few times but nothing notable for him. Another oddity was the performance of Senior RB Garrett Brown. The Little Lion defense was able to shut down the running game of DuBois very early in the night.

The Beavers hoped to have a better second half. Senior RB Shane Marshall scored the first DuBois touchdown with 5:39 left in the third quarter. If the Beavers played the fourth quarter right they might have had a shot at winning.

State College had something else up their sleeves. The Little Lions put up 14 points in a minute and a half; the first seven points coming with about eight minutes left. DuBois made a costly mistake by throwing an interception that State College returned for the 35-7 touchdown.

Senior RB Jared Baummer scored DuBois’ second touchdown in the last five minutes of the game to make the final score 35-13 Little Lions.

State College fans grew louder and louder as the final few seconds ticked away. The looks of disappointment and sadness appeared on the faces of DuBois’ players, coaches and fans after realizing that their season was over.

After many weeks of repetitive performance the Beavers faired well this season. They were thought not to be anything near this level of greatness at the beginning of the season. School records were broken, many games were won by extensive point margins, and young players got their feet in the door for next season’s “player to watch label.” Next season will be very exciting just knowing now what is in store.
