DuBois’ Brown breaks school record in 58-24 win over Meadville

Written by: on Sunday, October 28th, 2012

Another win had been predicted for the Beavers, but it wasn’t supposed to come easy. Meadville had a record coming in. History shows when they got the ball moving they put up points.

The Bulldogs spent most of the first quarter driving down the field, resulting in a 27 yard field goal. This added to problems beginning for DuBois. The Beavers started their first drive of the night, only to result in an interception by the Bulldogs on the very first play. Meadville later scored to go up 10-0 with 4:54 left in the first quarter.

The Beavers got on the board with a 28 yard field goal by Junior K Josh Hnat to make the score 10-3 Meadville in the final two minutes of the first quarter. Meadville answered back with a touchdown about halfway through the second quarter to make the score 17-3.

DuBois found the end zone for the first time in the game with 5:10 left in the second. Senior RB Garrett Miles took it in from 14 yards out to make the score 17-10. Senior RB Shane Marshall tied the game at 17-17 in the last two minutes before halftime. The drive started with a fumble recovered by Senior LB Nick Bontempo. Senior RB Garrett Brown scored his first touchdown of the night after running 65 yards in the final 13 seconds before halftime to make the score 24-17.

At halftime Brown was well on his way to another typical performance with 12 carries for 157 and one 65 yard touchdown. Sophomore QB Gabe French was making progress too with 5-9 passes complete for 39 yards and one touchdown pass to Miles.

With both teams in the locker room, fans milling around buying refreshments, and the marching band performing their halftime show produced a moment to reflect on the season that has gone by so quickly. Varsity Cheerleader, Senior Lauren Anderson commented “I think the season is going great! We are undefeated!’ Speaking of reflecting, Anderson said “Being that I’m a senior this year makes me sad. I don’t want to leave cheerleading. I’ll miss walking the sidelines with all the other girls.”

Just minutes into the second half, Brown ran the ball 44 yards to the end zone for yet another touchdown to make the score 31-17 DuBois. Miles made it in near the end of the third to rack up some more points to make the score 31-17. Marshall, playing LB, started the drive for the Beavers with a fumble recovery at the 30 yard line.

Even with a substantial lead built up, both Garretts scored in the third and fourth quarters. Brownie, as called by his teammates, made the score 44-17 in the last five minutes of the third. Meadville, however, found the end zone with 7:28 left in the third to lessen the difference. Miles ran one in near the beginning of the fourth to make the score 51-17 DuBois. Brown ran in the last touchdown from 55 yards out for the final score of 58-24.

Brown left the game with 26 carries for 359 yards and 4 touchdowns. That’s a DAHS record. The previous single game rushing yard record was set by Derek Marshall in 2001 for 344 yards. French threw 9-15 for 105 yards. Miles had 4 receptions for 67 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Beavers go into week 9 still undefeated with the final game of the regular season at home vs. the 8-1 Slippery Rock Rockets.

NOTE: This is the fifth game this season DuBois has put up 50 or more points.
