District 5 Talk Week 2

Written by: on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Tussey Mountain – Break up the Titans

Teams in the Inter-County Conference Southern Division had better keep an eye on Tussey Mountain. Thus far, the Titans are off to an impressive 2-0 start and are averaging 37.5 points per game. It’s the fourth time in the last five years that the Titans have gotten off to a 2-0 start.

Dane Diehl, Levi Neuder, and Jeff Wentz have all surpassed the 150-yard rushing mark through the first two weeks. Collectively, the trio has scored all 10 Titan rushing touchdowns.

However, previous 2-0 starts have not seen the end-of-season record finish all that impressively. The Titans had 2-0 starts each year from 2005-2007, and those three seasons ended with a combined overall record of 17-16.

The Titans’ best finish in that stretch was a 7-4 mark in 2007.

Tussey Mountain seeks a 3-0 start when it takes to the field Friday night against Mount Union.

Meyersdale – Raiders’ ’09 start is comparable to ’06 D5 championship team

With the start the Meyersdale Red Raiders have gotten off to this 2009 season, it’s very eerily reminiscent of their impressive run to a District 5 championship and an 11-1 overall record (the lone loss came to WPIAL champion Clairton, 32-14).

In 2006, Meyersdale scored 94 points through its first two games. Fast forward to the present day. The Red Raiders have scored 90 points (45 per game) through their first two games.

Defensively, the ’06 team held its first eight opponents to eight points or less (nine overall). So far, in 2009, the Raider defensive unit as a whole (including the reserves) has allowed an average of nine points per game.

Meyersdale enters Friday’s game against two-time District 5 champion North Star boasting an offense that is averaging 444 yards per game (348.5 of those are rushing yards).

North Star won last year’s meeting, 22-7.

Shade – These guys are sack artists

Don’t look now, but the Shade Panthers, if the first two games are any indication, might have a pretty tough defense for opposing offenses to match wits with this season.

Already, through two games, the Panthers have tallied 16 sacks – or eight per game. Sam Aikey has six of the 16 sacks, Josh May has three, Davin Winfield and Matt Orner each have two sacks apiece, and Cody McDonald has one.

Shade has already pitched a shutout, picked off six passes, and recovered two fumbles. The Panthers are allowing an average of 10 points per game.
