Clairton Extends Streak

Written by: on Friday, November 23rd, 2012

Sto-Rox quarterback Lenny Williams said of Clairton superstar Tyler Boyd, “We are not playing the Boyds Bears, we’re playing the Clairton Bears.  They’re LOADED with weapons we have to try and stop.”  Sto-Rox Coach Dan Bradley had a different take.  “We have to stop Tyler Boyd, period.”

Both plans worked well,  for the first two quarters anyway.   Clairton extended their Pennsylvania state record winning streak beating up on the Vikings to the score of 58-21.

But if you looked only at the first half, you would have never guessed the score would be that high.  The score at the half was 22-13 in favor of Clairton and had the Vikings thinking they had a shot at the upset.

After the break, Clairton coach Tom Nola said, “We aren’t playing Clairton football. Too many mistakes.  We need to be more disciplined.  And we need to find a way to get Boyd loose.”  Tyler opened the second half with six runs for 50 yards.  Terrish Webb finished that drive with a 24 yard touchdown catch.  The Bears never looked back.

Clairton opened the scoring to start the game on their first series of the game, a 51 yard drive capped by a 31 yard touchdown pass from Ford to Titus Howard. The point after failed and Clairton seemed like they were ready to roll.

Sto-Rox had other plans.  A Clairton miscue on a punt snap gave Sto-Rox the ball at the Clairton 23.  Lenny Williams hit Elisha Bonner for an 18 yard score and the Bears, for the first time since week one, trailed 7-6.

The Vikings then got what could have been a golden opportunity.  Williams intercepted Bears quarterback Armoni Ford and gave the Vikings the ball at the Bears 30 but Clairton held them to four and out.

Terrish Webb took charge for the Bears getting two ridiculous catches, one for 42 yards and the second for 22 yards and the score.  Webb would end the game with four receptions for 99 yards and two scores.  Clairton led 14-7 on the Boyd two point reception play.  The Vikings then dipped into their bag of tricks, scoring on one play the next time they got the ball.  Tyler Boyd hit Santions Sims for a 74 yard touchdown on a double reverse pass.  Boyd stretched out for the two point play and Clairton led 22-7.

Sto-Rox stayed tough, and Williams escaped a sack for a huge first down gain.  Brandon Blair scored on a seven yard run to bring the Vikings as close as they would get to the lead again.

The second half was all Bears.  Following the Boyd touchdown that made the score 28-13, Clairton got an interception of a Lenny Williams pass at the 14.  One play later Boyd was in the endzone.  35-13.  Williams would make up for the pick on the next drive, going 52 yards down the sideline making the score 35-12.

Clairton answered with Boyd, one play, 77 yards.  43-21.  Brian Clifford went 25 yards for a score and Ford closed out the scoring for the Bears.
