Team # 1 Central Catholic (7) 0-0

Written by: on Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Believe it or not, Central Catholic’s 11-win season last year was its first 10+ win season since the Vikings hoisted their third PIAA AAAA state championship trophy in 2007.  The Vikings figure to be one of AAAA’s most dynamic football teams, returning several key pieces from an offense which averaged 30.1 points per game.

Namely, three starters return to the offensive line – Logan Dietz, Scott Haraczy and Jack Walther (all of whom check in at at least 270 pounds) – as do wide receivers Juwan Haynes (7 rec. TD) and Anthony Nixon (34 rec., 699 yds.), running backs Damion Jones-Moore (1,089 yards, 20 TD; career 3,420 rushing yards) and Luigi Lista-Brinza (779 yards, 8 TD), fullback Rob Brown and quarterback Perry Hills (85-of-154, 1,582 yds, 10 TD; 16-2 record as a varsity QB).  Since Hills assumed the reins of Central Catholic’s offense, the Vikings have averaged 29.9 points per game over the last 18 games.  Both Hills and Nixon issued pre-season declarations to Maryland, Jones-Moore has generated D-1 offers and Dietz is also generating D-1 and 1-AA offers and attention.

Defensively, linebacker Louis Taglianetti, another potential Division-1 prospect, will be a key leader returning from a unit which allowed a little more than nine points per game in 2010 and returns seven starters, including defensive back Ed Latimer.  Since the start of the 2003 season, Central Catholic is 92-13 (.876) overall, and the Vikings appear poised to be in a very good position to reach their fifth WPIAL AAAA championship game since 2001.

Excellent overview of Central Catholic ! A few other players to look out for are #71 6-6, 280# Sr DT Nick Sennott who just came out for the team after playing hockey for 2 years. He is raw but has huge upside potential. WR’s, David Urso,Jr 6-2,195#’s and Sr Brandon Farrell 6-0, 167#’s (2 nice receivers); Jr LB Leo Loughery, 6-2, 200#’s (looks to be coming on strong) and Sr OL Trevor Rick, 6-6, 290 #’s who with that size has to be a player this year for the Vikings.
