Defending WPIAL “A” champion Clairton will have at least one Division-1 prospect, and possibly two, on its 2009 team after one of its top athletes made a verbal commitment earlier in the week and another received his first Division-1 offer.
Kevin Weatherspoon, WesternPAFootball.net’s 2008 “Small School Player of the Year,” verbally committed to Pitt Sunday, June 28, according to Rivals.com.
Weatherspoon also had offers from Syracuse, Akron, Kent State, and Toledo, and had generated interest from West Virginia, Wisconsin, Maryland, and North Carolina.
The 5’11, 175-pound Weatherspoon finished 2008 with nearly 1,500 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns, and was a beast on defense and special teams for Clairton, which made its first-ever appearance in a PIAA championship game, a 35-16 loss to Steelton-Highspire.
Also, another Clairton athlete, running back Deontae Howard, has received his first Division-1 offer, from Towson State, according to Rivals.
Howard also has generated interest from Pitt, West Virginia, and Toldeo.
Howard scorched defenses last season for 1,748 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns. He replaced speedster Zaire Washington, who finished his career for Clairton after the 2007 season with 4,050 rushing yards.
Clairton projects to be one of the top-3 teams in all of Class “A” this coming 2009 season.
