Marauders streak continues with 13-7 win

After looking over Bishop Guilfoyle’s last three seasons, Westmont Hilltop hasn’t been in close competition with the team for multiple years. The same was assumed this year especially after Westmont lost the previous week 36-0 against Forest Hills. This game was slated to be the same way with Guilfoyle’s dominant defense holding the Hilltoppers simple offense to a touchdown or less and letting their offense get the job done. On paper it looked like Guilfoyle had an easy win.

The game started off slow. Bishop Guilfoyle got the opening kickoff and started their drive which lasted only 3 plays before punter Kolton McGhee stepped on the field. After the punt the Hilltoppers run heavy offense took the field. Several plays later Hilltoppers Junior Runningback Tucker Kushner took a pitch up the middle and took the ball across Guilfoyle’s 30 yard line. Westmont was able to move the ball all the way down to the 5 yard line but Guilfoyle’s defense kept them from scoring.

On the following drive, Guilfoyle had made their way to the Hilltoppers 19 yard line. On the drive Senior Quarterback Mark Conrad found tight end Charles Patterson capping off the 95 yard drive with a touchdown. On the following kickoff, McGhee perfectly places a kick between the receiving team lines that is recovered by Michael Berish at the Westmont 30. Despite the great field position Guilfoyle can’t capitalize and the Hilltoppers get the ball back. After some scoreless drives McGhee is sent onto the field again only this time to attempt a 47 yard field goal. McGhee couldn’t knock it through and Westmont got the ball back. Each team had one more drive and Guilfoyle was able to put themselves within striking distance. Mark Conrad hands the ball off to Max Sankey at the 25 yard line with roughly 4 minutes left in the second quarter. After a brief moment where Sankey appears to be stopped, he spins and breaks out of a tackle and bounces to the outside to find the endzone. After a bad snap and failed extra point Westmont gets the ball back but can’t score before the half, giving the Marauders the 13-0 lead at the half.

Westmont began the third quarter with the ball and their first drive of the third quarter lasted 11 out of the 12 minutes. With 53 seconds left to go, Westmont Junior running back Camden Moors finally punches one in at the goal line.

After Guilfoyle drives 62 yards downfield to the Westmont 3, their attempt at a touchdown is unsuccessful, leaving it to the field goal team for what should be an easy 20 yard chip in, but McGhee misses wide left. Westmont gets another chance at offense but their drive is cut short when Quarterback Lee Santee rolls out to pass and throws the ball downfield. Guilfoyle safety Mark Conrad comes under the receiver and intercepts the ball. Guilfoyle takes over but can’t put the ball in the endzone. Westmont gains possession of the ball again one last time now, near the 2 minute mark, and start making their way downfield. After a big Westmont play to put them inside the 40. With only 18 seconds remaining Santee throws another pass this time intercepted by defensive back Daniel Potopa to seal the game.

Westmont Hilltop Runningback Camden Moors led all rushers with 138 yards on the ground while Guilfoyle Quarterback Mark Conrad led with 113 yards through the air.

Guilfoyle survives another day and goes on to play Bishop McCort this upcoming Friday at Mansion Park. Both teams head into the game this week with records of 2-0. The game should be an interesting one to watch.
