Bishop Guilfoyle streak reaches 50 with bounce back win over McCort

Written by: on Saturday, September 9th, 2017

After an unusual performance from the Marauders last week, squeezing out the win by only 6 points, they bounced back this week to defeat Bishop McCort 19-0 in a tough defensive game.

McCort began the game with the ball, as running back Carnell Andrews took the short kick out past the 20 yard line. McCort relies heavily on the option plays and that’s how they started the game off. After a few dive plays from fullback Anthony Walters, Carnell Andrews took a hand off and burst through the line, going deep into Marauder territory. Several plays later quarterback William Miller tossed to Carnell Andrews on a pitch to the right. Andrews pulled up and completed a pass over the Marauders defense into the endzone to wide receiver Grant Jeanjaquet. Fortunately for the Marauders there was a flag on the play and the touchdown was called back. McCort , on a second attempt at the end zone, was still unable to score on the drive giving the Marauders possession.

Josh Yasulitis took the first snap of the drive at the 13 yard line for the Marauders, darting to the right side of the field, picking up a first down. Plays later quarterback Mark Conrad was able to connect with Michael Berish on a 36 yard touchdown pass for the first score of the game. After a successful extra point Guilfoyle was on the board with 4 minutes remaining in the first.

After McCort regained possession, the Marauder defense did what its been known to do, forcing them to punt and give the ball back. On the fourth play of the Marauders second drive, Yasulitis got back behind the center lining up at QB. With 1:13 left in quarter 1, Yasulitis heaved the ball up to Mark Conrad for a spectacular 48 yard touchdown catch. The extra point was blocked making the score 13-0 with only a minute left in the first quarter.

Once McCort regained possession they were unable to make much progress at the conclusion first quarter and had the ball to start the second. After a drive lasting only a few minutes the Marauders were able to get the ball back and take it all the way down to the Bishop McCort 23 yard line. Conrad takes the snap but was pressured by the defensive line. He rolled out and found Yasulitis in the back of the end zone for another Marauder touchdown. Yet again the Marauder point after was blocked by the McCort defense making the score 19-0.

McCort stormed down the field and got into scoring position, looking to strike before the half. As quarterback William Miller threw to the left half of the end zone free safety Mark Conrad cut under the receiver and picked the ball off. Guilfoyle couldn’t score before the midway point and headed into the locker room with a 19 point cushion.

Guilfoyle got the ball to start the second half. After the two teams exchanged multiple drives McCort was forced to punt the ball. The kick comes off and soared to the right as Conrad tries to get under it and is unable to field the punt. McCort fell on the ball and was able to get great field position on the drive. McCort tried to finally punch one in and runs the option to the right. Charles Patterson broke through the line and wrapped up the Crusher QB, stripped the ball and headed downfield, keeping them from becoming a scoring threat again.

The scoreless fourth quarter begins and the Marauders have the ball. Unable to score the Crushers got the ball back. No team is able to put any more points on the board and only swap drives to wrap up another Marauder win, this one becoming their 50th straight win, the 3rd longest streak in the nation.

Andrews led all rushers with 114 but Guilfoyle was able to get the edge on passing, as Yasulitis and Conrad combine for 181 yards through the air.

The Marauders take on the Cambria Heights Highlanders this Friday as their second away game of the season and McCort goes home to face Somerset for their fourth game of the season.
