Belle Vernon Area OL/DL Dorian Johnson issues verbal declaration to Penn State

Written by: on Sunday, June 24th, 2012

Bill O’Brien’s fast start with his 2013 recruiting class at Penn State doesn’t appear to be losing any momentum.

Dorian Johnson, a 6’6, 275-pound offensive lineman from Belle Vernon High School in northwestern Fayette County, issued a verbal declaration to Penn State Sunday, according to national recruiting services Scout.com and Rivals.com.

Johnson is Penn State’s 12th recruit of the 2013 class to issue a verbal declaration to the program, and he is the 11th of the 12 prospects rated as a three-star prospect or higher.  Eleven of the 12 prospects are ranked in the top-55 of their respective positions, and Penn State’s 2013 recruiting class thus far ranks No. 10 in the nation and third overall among Big Ten Conference affiliates, trailing only Michigan (No. 1) and Ohio State (No. 9).

Including the Nittany Lions, Johnson held at least 19 scholarship offers from a variety of programs and conferences, including Alabama, Boston College, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Maryland, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers, Temple, Tennesee, Toledo, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

The Leopards’ senior-to-be was rated by Scout.com as the No. 13 offensive tackle in the 2013 recruiting class and assigned a four-star rating, landing as Scout’s No. 1 offensive tackle prospect in Pennsylvania.  Rivals meanwhile rated Johnson the No. 23 offensive tackle, No. 7 prospect in the state and the No. 233 prospect overall in the 2013 class.

Johnson served as one of the driving forces paving the way for a Belle Vernon offensive unit which averaged 233.3 yards (159.8 rushing, 73.5 passing) and 17.8 points per game, producing a 900-yard rusher.  Johnson was named a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette all-Big Eight Conference selection along both the Leopards’ offensive and defensive lines.

Belle Vernon finished 4-6 overall, reaching the opening round of the WPIAL AAA playoffs opposite eventual semifinalist Franklin Regional.
