Altoona gets Defensive

The Altoona Mt. Lions scored their first touchdown of the season only a minute into the game on a 3 yard pass from Ryan Shope (Sr) to wide receiver, Daquan Watson (Sr). The score was set up from a 50 yard opening kick return by Hunter Stoudnour (Jr). However, it was Altoona’s defense that stole the show after that. Forcing eight turnovers, the defense tallied 23 points by way of 3 fumble return touchdowns and a safety.

Outside linebacker, Tyler Petucci (Jr), forced a fumble on Allderdice’s opening drive and middle linebacker, Brinton Simington (Sr) scooped up the ball and rumbled 30 yards to put Altoona ahead 14-0. Later in the first quarter, Allderdice found themselves deep in their own territory when Altoona defensive end, Max Sankey (Jr) darted into the backfield forcing another fumble that was returned 4 yards by Josh Russo (Sr) for Altoona’s third touchdown in the opening quarter.

Second quarter scoring got started when Allderdice quarterback, Kyier Hurt was sacked in the end zone by Sankey for a safety. After an exchange of possessions, Altoona quarterback, Ryan Shope threw his second touchdown pass of the game when he hit running back, Tyler Petucci for a short 4 yard pass. With that, Altoona took a 29-0 lead into the half.

The second half started much like the first when a Petucci sack caused another fumble that was snatched up by defensive tackle, Jayvion Queen (Jr), who was escorted by a host of Mt. Lions 54 yards to the end zone, making the score 36-0.

The last score of the evening came towards the end of the 3rd quarter when Russo took a pitch from Shope and out-raced the defense up the side line for a 36 yard touchdown run. Defensive tackles Jake Lindner (Sr), Jayvion Queen and Gaige Hill (So) consistently plugged the middle anchoring a defense that held Allederdice to just 22 yards of total offense. Altoona’s aggressive defense not only forced 5 fumbles and 3 interceptions, but also had seven sacks and a blocked punt (OLB, Blaise Colabove, Sr).

Ryan Shope threw for 91 yards and 2 touchdowns, while wide receiver Kyle Good (Sr) led the team with 40 yards receiving. Russo led all rushers with 58 yards on five carries. The win was the first in the career for new head coach, Nick Felus.

Next week, Altoona hosts Norwin who is coming off a tough fourth quarter loss to Penn Trafford in their opener.  Allderdice will travel to Brashear.
