Written by: on Wednesday, December 6th, 2017

Class 4A State Championship, Thursday, Dec. 7th 7:00 PM at Hersheypark Stadium

Head Coach: Mike Mischler

How They Got Here

2017 Schedule

Cathedral Prep opened the year ranked #1 in the rankings and as many expected, they ran the table. Easily. The Ramblers boast 9 players with college offers, 7 of them have D1 offers.  Of those, there are 5 commits: DB Terry Roberts-Iowa, WR Anthony Bolden-Navy, LB Matt Bauer-Notre Dame, QB Joe Mischler-Ohio and OL Freddie Scruggs-Penn State. Hard to imagine any team with a bigger resume. How about we add the Ramblers are averaging 47.9 points per game? Defense? Allowing just 11.8 per game, most in cleanup time.

Storylines? How about the three Lucas brothers? Seniors, RB Matt and Safety Anthony are 2 of triplets (the third, John, doesn’t play football) and sophomore FB Mike. WR Tyler Oedekoven? Only the first WR in Prep history to hit 1000 yards, now he’s done it twice. Mischler? Over 3,000 yards with 37 tds.  Billy Lucas? Ran for 268 yards and 5 tds last week against a powerful Berks Catholic. Defense? How about Matt Bauer with 96 tackles, 11.5 for loss, 9 sacks. That’s how they got here.

Coaches comments:

What would it mean for Cathedral Prep to win the game:

It’s, well, you start the season with a goal. We’ve had a target on our back since week one due to the number of returning starters and we are the defending champs. For us as a school, team and community it would be extremely satisfying to finish on a high note and win again.

What was your teams defining moment:

I hope that’s yet to be determined.

Keys to winning the game on offense:

We have to be have balance. We’ve been successful both running and passing the ball. We have to keep them guessing, They’re fast and athletic. We’ll have to not concentrate on hitting the big play all the time and just go with what works. We’ll play our chess game.

Keys to winning the game on defense:

We’ll have to be able to make adjustments on the fly. They are so strong, powerful, fast and athletic, so wrapping up and making initial contact so others can get to the play to help bring their guys down.

Here’s a breakdown of Cathedral Prep’s projected starters in the Class 4A PIAA State Championship game with coaches quotes:

11 QB Joe Mischler 12

He’s been remarkable. Efficient, smart, mobile. He does what you want a qb to do

Running Backs:

21 RB Matt Lupo 12

4 RB Billy Lucas 11

38 FB Mike Lupo 10

Last week Lucas shined. He runs with a purpose. Lupo is a good, solid high school back and together they make a good 1-2 punch. Mike also does a nice job when needed

Wide Receivers:

3 WR Tyler Oedekoven 12

13 WR Skyler Neely 11

5 WR Adam Malesiewski 12

2 WR Terry Roberts 12

They had a great year this bunch. Oedekoven went over 1,000 again. Terry Roberts, you can see he’s really gelled with Joe and their timing is much improved over last year. Adam and Skyler are huge weapons for us also.

Offensive Line:

75 LT Fredrick Scruggs 12

57 LG Kawaun Deboe 11

55 C Chris Smith 12

67 RG Jordan Covatto 11

53 RT Matt Carr 12

They had one of their best efforts last week. They moved the Berks line with purpose

Defensive Line:

54 DT William Burns 12

75 DE Frederick Scruggs 12

55 DE Chris Smith 12

Two guys really stand out but all three play great together. Burns, he’s having a good year and Scruggs, well, he is one of the best in the state. We need all three to keep the pressure on

27 LB Matthew Bauer 12

18 LB Ryan Sargent 12

22 LB Hunter Orlando 12

Bauer is the star here. He’s just unbelievable. So smart, football smart as well as classroom smart. The key here will be to get him free to make the plays he does.

Defensive Backs:

21 SS Matt Lupo 12

30 SS Anthony Lupo 12

4 SS Billy Lucas 11

2 CB Terry Roberts 12

9 CB Amory Coleman-Reeves 12

49 FS Luke Sittinger 10

Sophomore Luke Sittinger has been a big surprise for us. Roberts, I don’t know if there’s a better DB in the state. With Lucas there we can move him up for run support when needed.
