2011 Big School Coach of the Year – Lou Berry, University PrepWritten by: David Mika on Monday, January 2nd, 2012
A first-year program, University Prep’s football program was made up of students from the closed Schenley and Peabody high schools, among others, and first-year head coach Lou Berry’s team was viewed as the wild card entering the season because few knew how the Panthers would gel.
The team gelled just fine, thank you, and made a name for itself with its staunch, unrelenting defense, which limited its 2011 opposition to a meager 73 points in 13 games, and, actually, the three touchdowns in the Week Two meeting with Brashear were the result of offensive turnovers, so the Panther defense allowed even less.
History will show this UP team went 11-2, claimed the Pittsburgh City League championship with a 14-0 shutout of Allderdice and outscored its opponents 26.3 to 5.6 for the course of the season, posting nine shutouts along the way.
The Panthers’ season came to an end narrowly in a PIAA preliminary round game against District 6/9/10 subregional champion State College, 33-32.
