2008 Small School Player of the Year: Kevin Weatherspoon, Clairton HS Some will say, “How did a wide receiver get selected as a player of the year?” When you hear the name Kevin Weatherspoon, it’s only automatic to think of him as a wide receiver, as he was the #1 target in Clairton’s passing attack. He finished the year with over 1,400 yards receiving, and, at one point in the regular season, was averaging over 30 yards per reception. But Weatherspoon was also a player on defense and special teams, making him a true all-around athlete that had the potential to hit a home run every time he touched the ball. Weatherspoon scored 25 touchdowns on the season – 20 receiving. He was part of a Clairton offense which became the fifth South Hills-based Pittsburgh team to hit the 600-point plateau in a season, and also part of a Bears’ defense which held 14 opponents to seven points or less and notched eight shutouts.
