Wilmington Area Greyhounds (15-1)
Written by: David Mika on Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008Wilmington breezed through the first nine weeks of its 2008 schedule, but the final four games for the Hounds proved to be anything but a cakewalk. Wilmington’s last four opponents, Slippery Rock, Central-Martinsburg, Aliquippa, and West Catholic, finished 2008 with a combined record of 46-12. Wilmington won its ninth District 10 championship since moving from the WPIAL in the early 1990s, second Western Finals in school history, and first PIAA championship. Head coach Terry Verrelli, who has won 233 games in his career, said the state title victory ranked, “at the top,” of all his victories. The Hounds scored a school-record 598 points, which tied the prolific 1990 Farrell Steelers for 28th in state history, and shattered the school’s previous record by over 90 points.
