KNIGHT AND DAY: Strong Vincent routs Franklin Area

Written by: on Saturday, September 13th, 2008

FRANKLIN, Pa. – Two years ago, Strong Vincent lost at Franklin High School in a downpour.

This time around, the Colonels didn’t fool around in the rain.  They just shoved the ball down Franklin’s throat, and the Knights became opponent #3 to fall under the red and black steamroller.

Strong Vincent (3-0) ran for 318 yards and scored five first-half touchdowns en route to a convincing 48-6 victory over the Knights (1-2) on, of all surfaces, a rain-soaked grass field.

Vincent head coach Tom Cacchione had an explanation for why the outcome was different this time around despite similar weather conditions from two years previous.

“This year, we can run the ball between the tackles,” he said.  “We’re very big up front.”

And coupled with Strong Vincent’s patented quickness, the size only makes the task of knocking the Colonels off even tougher.

SV got on the board on its fifth play from scrimmage courtesy of a Deonte Flemings 42-yard touchdown run on a midline keeper.  Jordan Ferraro pushed the Colonel advantage to 14-0 with a 1-yard run on Vincent’s second possession.

Franklin managed to cut the lead to 14-7 on a Julian Westad-to-Tyler Bittner 51-yard pass, catch, and run.  Bittner, an All-state wide receiver and owner of numerous Franklin receiving records, had four catches for 105 yards and the touchdown.

But Strong Vincent just flexed its muscles, and didn’t bat an eyelash to Franklin’s challenge.  Emari Tangle darted in from three yards out, then Flemings scored on a 43-yard run, and DJ Barney (4-of-7, 35 yards, TD) found Robert Joyce on an 11-yard touchdown pass as the red and black built a commanding 35-6 halftime lead.

Darryl Brooks invoked the mercy rule when he scored from 10 yards out on SV’s third play of the second half.  Derrick Hemphill closed the scoring with a six-yard run later in the third quarter.

In all, 10 different Colonels got a carry for the game, and none ran for over 100 yards.  Brooks’ 86 yards on six carries led the way, followed by Flemings’ 81 yards and two scores on three carries.

Ferraro added 62 yards and a touchdown on six carries; Hemphill 23 yards and a score on four attempts; and Tangle finished with 31 yards and a score on seven attempts.

Franklin Area, as a team, ran for just five yards on 23 carries, and were led by Brandon Perrine’s 30 rushing yards on 11 carries.  Westad completed 9-of-22 passes for 180 yards with one touchdown and one interception for the Knights.

So how did Cacchione grade his team, which, through three weeks, has scored 150 points, run for 1,016 yards, and averages 50 points per game?

“We’re a C+ right now,” Cacchione said.  “And we’re hoping to be a B+ after next weekend.”
