Sloppy weather equals sloppy win for Mercer

Written by: on Saturday, September 13th, 2008

HERMITAGE, Pa. – The sky’s floodgates opened up Saturday afternoon, drenching anyone unfortunate enough to be outside in the monsoon-like downpours.

But Kennedy Catholic had another set of floodgates open up against it – that being the Mercer Area defense.

The Mustangs (3-0) scored four non-offensive touchdowns and forced six turnovers in an ugly 38-7 victory over Kennedy (0-3) from Bulata Stadium in Hermitage.

The beginning of the game more resembled a case of the dropsies.  Kennedy fumbled away the opening kickoff, then four plays later, Mercer’s Andrew Erdos threw an interception to Jay Leipheimer.  But the Golden Eagles, feeling even more generous than their opponents, had a fumble picked up by Herbie Hennegan and returned 48 yards for a Mustang touchdown.  Mercer led, 7-0.

On Kennedy’s third offensive possession of the first period, quarterback Danny D’onofrio’s pass was intercepted by Eric Staul and returned 17 yards for a 13-0 Mustang lead.

Mercer pushed the lead to 20-0 when Erdos (10 rushes, 72 yards) scored on a 63-yard keeper down the Kennedy Catholic sideline.

The Mustangs scored two more touchdowns in the first half to build a 32-0 halftime lead.  Erdos completed his only pass for a 17-yard score to Rawlins Huntley, and Andy Reda returned another D’onofrio interception 92 yards for a score as time expired in the first half.

The Mustangs concluded their defensive scoring binge when Billy Selders blocked a punt and Brandon Little returned it 13 yards to give Mercer a 38-0 lead.

Kennedy Catholic, with the mercy rule in effect, closed to 38-7 when Marlon Davis weaved into the end zone from 18 yards out.  That run served as Kennedy Catholic’s second-longest play from scrimmage – for the game.

Davis finished with 57 yards rushing on 13 carries.  The rest of the team ran 17 times for 19 yards.  Kennedy finished with 121 yards of total offense, but had six turnovers (four fumbles, two INTs) which directly led to 19 Mustang points.

Terrance Davis ran 10 times for 45 yards for Mercer, and Huntley added 21 yards on seven carries.  176 of Mercer’s 193 total offensive yards came on the ground.
