District 9 Talk Week 3

Clarion-Limestone – Dan Miller closing in on personal milestone

The past few football seasons have been a struggle for Clarion-Limestone, a school that in the early half of the 2000s was competing for District 9 “A” playoff berths and championships. But despite the tough times, one of the Lions’ own could be on the verge of some pretty good things.

Quarterback Dan Miller is just 574 yards shy of the 4,000-yard mark for his career. A four-year varsity football player, Miller threw for a career high 1,406 yards as a sophomore.

The C-L school record for career passing yardage belongs to Hayden Johnston, who threw for 4,401 yards from 2001-’04. Miller might not hit that mark, but he has a pretty decent chance at becoming the second 4,000-yard passer in school history.

Thus far in 2009, Miller has thrown for 576 yards and seven touchdowns. He’s completed 32-of-74 passes.

Elk County Catholic – Junior RB leads District 9 in rushing yardage this season

It might come as a surprise to some that District 9’s leading rusher through Week 3 hails from Elk County Catholic High School, especially considering that this back has very nearly reached his rushing yardage total from 2008 in just a few weeks time.

Ricky Pearsall, a junior for the Crusaders this year, ran for 697 yards and six touchdowns last season in helping ECC reach the D9 “A” semifinals. But the way his ’09 season has started, he might double, or nearly triple, that total.

To date, Pearsall has 58 carries for 606 yards and eight touchdowns. He posted an impressive 275-yard, four-touchdown effort against Smethport Friday night, and opened the season with 203 yards and three scores against perennial playoff qualifier Coudersport.

Those two game totals this year surpass Pearsall’s previous game high for rushing yardage. He posted 180 rushing yards last season in a loss to Curwensville.
