District 9 Talk Week 2
Written by: David Mika on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009Clarion Area – An orange and black scoring machine
The last time Clarion Area High School got off to a start this good, the Bobcats wound up setting a school record for points scored in a single season.
Clarion, a class “A” school from the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference, is off to a very impressive 2-0 start. It’s not just the fact that the Bobcats are undefeated, but it’s the fact that they’ve burnt out a few scoreboard light bulbs in the process.
The Bobcats have scored 109 points after drubbing Moniteau and A-C Valley. Chris Rosetti and Andy Close, of D9sports.com, reported that the 109 points is the second-best start in school history – since the 2000 season, when the Bobcats opened with 122 points. Later in the ’00 season, Clarion scored 116 points in consecutive weeks.
Clarion wound up scoring 508 points in 2000, which ranks as the 5th-best scoring output in District 9 history.
Brockway – All-out aerial assault for the Rovers
It’s year number two of the Frank Varischetti spread offense at Brockway, and boy, oh boy, have the Rovers caught on quickly to the system.
Derek Buganza was just a sophomore starting his first full varsity season last year, and already, he’s well over halfway toward becoming District 9’s all-time leading passer. Through two games, Buganza has thrown for 639 yards and seven touchdowns against only two interceptions.
Last season, Buganza threw for 2,923 yards and 28 touchdowns.
For his career, Buganza has thrown for an impressive 3,562 yards and 35 scores in just 13 varsity games, an average of 274 yards passing per game.
At his current pace, Buganza could challenge the state single-season record for passing yardage set by former Mechanicsburg gunslinger Zach Frazer. Frazer threw for 3,674 yards in 2004. Buganza’s pace, at least through 10 games, puts him at 3,195 yards. At 319 yards per game, he’d need 12 games to break Frazer’s mark.
The 2-0 Rovers have a big meeting with 2-0 Cameron County this weekend. The Red Raiders shut out the Rovers last season, 40-0.
Clearfield Area – From Jarrin Campman to Curtis Frye
Last season, Clearfield Area enjoyed the services of senior field general Jarrin Campman, who led the Bisons to a District 9 “AAA” championship and PIAA playoff victory against Pittsburgh City champion Brashear. Campman was a 1,000 yard rusher and passer last season, and put on passing shows in both the East/West and Lezzer Lumber all-star games.
You’d figure that a dual-threat athlete like Campman would be tough to replace, but through the first two games of the year, sophomore Curtis Frye has done a marvelous job.
Frye has completed 27-of-44 passes for 486 yards and four scores. He’s also got a good connection going with senior wide receiver Trey Campman, Jarrin’s younger brother.
Trey, who had over 600 receiving yards as a junior and over 250 yards as a sophomore, already has snared 14 passes for 294 yards (21 yard average per catch) and a pair of touchdowns.
