Oliver – Carrick Preview

Written by: on Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

The Game: Oliver (8 AAA) @ Carrick (8 AAA)

Date: Saturday, October 11, 2008, from Cupples Stadium in downtown Pittsburgh

2008 Record: Oliver (2-3), Carrick (3-3)

About Oliver: Oliver last won a City League championship in 2006, when it defeated Brashear and advanced to the PIAA “AAA” quarterfinals before falling to eventual PIAA champion General McLane.  What you may not remember (or maybe you do) is that Oliver held a 6-0 lead in that McLane game before the Lancers scored two touchdowns inside of the final six minutes to win, 14-6.

Oliver won two of its first three games, defeating Langley and Allderdice by a combined margin of 60-2.  But the Bears, like Carrick, enter this game on a two-game slide.  The Bears’ losses came to Schenley (22-20) and Perry (6-0), so really, the Bears are ten points away from being a 4-1 team.

The Bears are led by running back Martise Smith, and average 14.3 points per game.

About Carrick: Carrick enters this match-up on a two-game losing streak, but, to be fair, Carrick’s losses came at the hands of District 10 “AA” traditional power Sharon Area (37-26) and to recent City League juggernaut Brashear (21-6).  The 21 points were a season-low for the Bulls.

Carrick features a pair of exciting athletes in running back Ray Sesky and wide receiver/kick returner Bruce Thornton, one of the fastest athletes in the City League.

Carrick’s other loss was a 14-6 setback to Perry.  The Raiders had won their first two games of the season, averaging 31.5 points per game in that stretch.
