District 8 Talk Week 4

Written by: on Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

G-20 summit threw off normal City League schedule

There are some things in this world that football will stop for. A summit of world leaders right in downtown Pittsburgh would be one such thing.

Last weekend, Pittsburgh played host to the Group of 20 summit, which brought leaders from 20 of the world’s leading economies together for talks, photo-ops, and dinners. The summit basically shut down the city for two days, and revamped the City League football schedule for Week 4 fairly drastically.

Normally, the City League plays a Thursday game, a Friday double-header, and a Saturday game. Sometimes, there is a Saturday double-header if need be. But thanks to the G20, games normally scheduled for Thursday and Friday got moved to Saturday.

Thus, the City League played a rare quadruple-header on the South Side at Cupples Stadium. Brashear, Carrick, Perry, and Schenley all won.

It’s unknown if the City League ever had a quadruple-header of football games before.

District 8 > 09/26/2009 :
Perry Traditional Academy Commodores (3-1) 13
Peabody Highlanders (2-2) 0
Schenley Spartans (3-1) 6
Oliver Bears (3-1) 0
Taylor Allderdice Dragons (0-4) 18
Brashear Bulls (3-1) 49
Westinghouse Bulldogs (0-3) 14
Carrick Raiders (2-2) 20
