2008 Big School Coach of the Year:

Written by: on Monday, December 29th, 2008

Jeff Metheny, Bethel Park High School

The South Hills of Pittsburgh is a region steeped in football tradition, and includes quality football teams like Clairton, Thomas Jefferson, Upper St. Clair, and now, Bethel Park.  Believe it or not, the Black Hawks’ goal this season was only the Great Southern Conference championship, and then to see where things went from there.  Bethel not only won its conference championship, but took the community on a ride it will never forget, stunning football powers McKeesport and Gateway in consecutive weeks, outlasting Wilson-West Lawn in a triple-overtime semifinal thriller, and reaching the school’s first-ever PIAA title game.  Metheny has won 100 career games during his tenure at Bethel Park.  Metheny helped lead Bethel Park to a school record for wins (15), the school’s first WPIAL football title, and first PIAA playoff victory against State College.  The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette named Metheny its 2008 Coach of the Year.
