Century Conference Clash

Both Keystone Oaks and Sto-Rocks have lived in the shadows in the likes of, Jeanette, Greensburg Central Catholic, and Beaver Falls this season. If you ask either team how they feel about that, they are more then fine with it, they love it. After all what coach and team wouldn’t want to be the under the fold team instead of the headline and just be able to sneak-up on teams and have more bulletin board material then either candidate in the Presidential election.
I do have some bad news for both the Golden Eagles and Vikings, they can hide no longer. In fact Friday night’s game is picked to be one of the best in the state this week. So if you haven’t heard that both KO and Sto-Rocks come in to the Century conference showdown unbeaten, now you have.
Most people are scratching their heads wondering were the Golden Eagles came from, that answer is class AAA. In the first year in class AA the Eagles look like a completely different team from a season ago, but who doesn’t struggle in a conference with Thomas Jefferson who just beat its 36th consecutive WPIAL team last Friday. KO did in fact struggle last season going 3-6 in the regular season, however with the less then stellar conference that they are in aside from TJ and Chartiers Valley, they Eagles still managed to get a short trip on the “Highway to Heinz” losing to Pine-Richland 57-7 in the first round who ironically enough moved to quad-A this year.
Coming into the 2008 season, the Eagles knew they had a chance to make some noise in the Century Conference, which is one of the most completive in the WPIAL this year with only 2 out of the 10 school already out of the playoff chase. They returned all five starting linemen, which is a key for senior running back Dion Wiegand who has rushed for 955 yards on 121 carries, and not to mention the 18 touchdowns he has scampered in for. The Eagles have relied on the running game for most of the season with 28 of the Eagles 32 offensive touchdowns coming on the ground.
Keystone Oaks defense isn’t to be taken lightly either, wile the offense has scored 235 points this season the defense is even more impressive only giving up 32 points. The Eagles really don’t like when another offense has the ball so they take it away, 18 times to be exact.
For the Vikings coming into Friday nights Conference clash, they to have had an impressive run. Their field general is no other then D1 recruit Paul Jones who has thrown the cover off the ball going 92 of 142 for a ridiculous 1505 yards and 20 TD’s in just seven games. Jones can also run the football with 183 yards rushing and six touchdowns.
Wile the offense of the Vikings seems much better then the offense for the Eagles, it is the opposite case for the defense. Sto-Rocks have scored 217 points, however given up 115.
It will truly be a battle between the light-up offense of Sto-Rocks and the shut down defense of KO, at Dormont Stadium on Friday night. The winner of this game will hold sole possession of the conference title, and that could mean the difference between meeting the likes of Jeannette or Beaver Falls in second round or at Heinz.
Will Keystone Oaks be able to keep up with the Jones’s? Or will Sto-Rocks stow the Eagles? Those questions and many more will be answered when both teams lay it all on the line in Dormont on Friday.
