Ridgway – Elk County Catholic Preview

Written by: on Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

The Game: Ridgway (9 A) @ Elk County Catholic (9 A)

Date: Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, from Dutch Country Stadium in Saint Marys

2008 Record: Ridgway (2-5), Elk County Catholic (5-2)

About Ridgway: The Elkers started off the season right, winning two of their first three games via the mercy-rule by a combined margin of 91-0.  But since then, the Elkers are in the midst of a four-game losins streak, which includes a 47-6 throttling by a resurgent Curwensville squad two weeks ago.

Ridgway sees four different running backs contribute to its ground attack – DJ Skraba, Elliot Pontious, Corey Eshbach, and Jesse Sheasley.

Joe Renaud directs the Elker offense, which has scored 118 points this season and averages nearly 17 points per game.  Renaud’s favorite targets are Eshbach and Skraba.

Interesting Ridgway fact: Ridgway once laid claim to Mike Dominick, who was inducted into the PSFCA Hall of Fame in 2007.  Dominick coached as Ridgway’s offensive coordinator from 1974-1976.  He then assumed head coaching responsibilities from 1977-’83.

In that nine year stretch, the Elkers went a combined 86-11-1 (.886) and won six Bucktail Conference championships.  There was not a playoff system at the time.

About Elk County Catholic: The Crusaders are off to a great start, and two weeks ago, defeated Kane Area 13-12 in overtime.  But despite the success winning, the Crusaders have only reached 30 points in one game this season, a 30-26 victory over Brockway.

The ECC offense heavily relies on its ground attack, which accounts for 85 percent of the Crusader output.  Ricky Pearsal (73 rush, 389 yards, 4 touchdowns), along with Kyle Gerber (79, 320, 2), Josh Catalano (67, 256, 1) and Tom Marconi (31, 135) are all factors in the ground game.

Joe Jacob has only thrown for 211 yards on the season, an average of just over 30 yards per game through the air.  Jacob has also thrown six interceptions.

Elk County Catholic, which allows 14.4 points per game, has tallied 14 sacks, four interceptions, 11 fumble recoveries, blocked a punt, and blocked four field goals this season.  (Frank Beamer would be pleased.)

Information about Mike Dominick came from the 2007 Big 33 Classic program biography of Dominick’s career.
