District 6 Talk Week 5

Written by: on Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

A closer look at Bishop McCort’s impressive victory over Richland

The statistics show that Bishop McCort defeated Richland 69-35 in a rainstorm Friday night at Point Stadium. In that game, the Crushers tallied 485 rushing yards, averaged 10.5 yards per carry, had 20 first downs, and racked up 509 yards of total offense.

Impressive, to say the least. But here are some facts and stats that may have got lost in the shuffle of the Crushers’ fifth victory of the season:

McCort now leads all western Pennsylvania teams in scoring this season. At 222 points, the Crushers beat out Portage Area (221 points) and District 10 juggernaut Farrell in that category.

The 69 points scored by McCort missed tying the single-game record by three points. Ironically, another Class “A” school in the western half of the state’s record for points in a game is also 72. That would be Cameron County High School, located in District 9, who set that game high in 1999.

The Crushers’ performance against Richland set or tied season highs in six individual and eight team statistical categories.

Moshannon Valley/Bellwood-Antis both 5-0, meet Friday

Both the Black Knights and Blue Devils meet this weekend, and both have 5-0 season records. That’s not the only things the two teams share. Moshannon Valley and Bellwood-Antis are, to date, practically mirror images of each other.

If you need proof, check out these stats:

Rushing yards per game: MV – 222.0; BA – 205.6

Passing yards per game: MV – 100.0; BA – 130.6

Total offense per game: MV – 322.0; BA – 336.2

Average points per game: MV – 35.2; BA – 37.2

Both teams’ leading rushers are within 10 yards per game of each other, and both teams’ leading tacklers are within six-tenths of a stop of each other, in terms of per game averages.

The only stat that separates the two: Bellwood thumped Moshannon Valley twice last season, by a combined margin of 57-14.

Altoona pulls a stunner on Central Dauphin

Last season, the Mountain Lions shocked the WPIAL by knocking off North Allegheny to open the season, 28-21. Most figured the Tigers would be a sure-fire favorite to win the game.

Friday night, Altoona scored another big upset, this one over once-unbeaten Central Dauphin, 18-17. The maroon and white scored a touchdown and converted a two-point play to win, sending CD to a 3-2 season record.

In the last two weeks, CD has been outscored a combined 66-30, and hasn’t seemed to recover from a mercy-rule pasting applied in Week 4 by Bishop McDevitt.
