POY: Mike Caputo, West Allegheny – It would be one thing to give Caputo the Player of the Year Award for his exploits out of the backfield. Caputo finished 2009 running for over 2,600 yards and 34 touchdowns. But he turned in quite the all-around effort on the football field, and was easily the Indians’ most valuable player on the gridiron. Caputo finished the season as West A’s leading tackler, and he also led the team in interceptions. He was also a threat on special teams, scoring a touchdown on a kick return and adding three more scores as a receiver out of the backfield. Just in terms of touchdowns alone, Caputo scored 228 of West A’s school-record 490 points. He helped the Indians to their fifth WPIAL championship (all since 1997) and fifth berth in the PIAA semifinals.
